Sunday the 11th of June saw the much-anticipated return of the Pipedream open at South Ronaldsay Golf Club, a fixture both members and visitors look forward too when the summer calendar is released.

For the most part, the weather held dry with just a few isolated showers for the afternoon starters, but the breezy conditions lasted for the day.

Chris Burton was the only person to get a measure on the 6th for the closest to the pin in 1 and followed it up by draining his birdie putt.

Chris George almost hit a different postcode with his drive on the 17th to scoop the prize for the longest drive of the day.

In the Net section, it was the early groups who set the pace through the day – Chris Burton was holding first with a net 67 but that was short-lived when Ross Smith arrived at the clubhouse with a 67 also and pipping Chris into first place with the dreaded countback rearing its ugly head. Not the last time we would see this today. Ross held on to first spot for most of the day until Angus Thompson arrived in with a fantastic net 62 to scoop his maiden open title and ensure the trophy stayed on the right side of the barriers. Well played Angus!

In the Gross Section, the afternoon players got the better of the scoring, but it was another South Ronaldsay player that made up the top 3. Glenn Grange was third with a 79 keeping up his fine run of scores in the 70’s but it was 2 Stromness players who battled it out for bragging rights. Defending champion Dennis Harvey carded a fine 74 after a shaky start to his back 9 but steadied the ship and finished out with a birdie 3 on 18 after a fine tee shot. But it wasn’t quite enough to beat the dreaded countback as his Stromness compatriot Angus Sutherland arrived in the clubhouse with a 74 also to Pip Dennis for the title. Good shooting Angus!

Thanks as always goes to Andy at Pipedream Plumbing; you’ve been a great supporter of the club for many years, and we continue to appreciate it. Erik who presented the prizes. Derek, Derek and all who gave up time to get the course looking as good as it was – it’s been a long time since we had the course playing so well, so early in the season. Sheila for sorting the draw and keeping the scores in check, Mike who as always did a stellar job starting us. The ladies who looked after us men with the rolls, soup and home bakes and Angus for providing some of the best soup I’ve had.

This season’s competition has been sponsored by Deerness Distillery Gin and our final winner, Liz Pirie with a nett score of 72, received a bottle of ‘Scuttled’.

Second place went to Lynn Shearer on 73 and third was Violet Ward on 77.

We were grateful for decent weather to finish, and many thanks go to Deerness Gin for their generous support

Our annual Scootie Auk competition against Westray Golf Club took place on Saturday 6th August.
The weather was disappointing for the time of year but at least the rain stopped when the main competition started; unfortunately, it started for the additional putting competition although the general good spirits weren’t at all dampened, maybe because of all the wonderful homebakes on offer.

As to be expected, home advantage played its part and the Hope brought the trophy home, although the best score of 34 nett was posted by Katy Mowatt playing for the away team. Other notable scores were those of Liz Pirie (nett 36) and Angie Ross (nett 39). We look forward to next year’s match, hopefully with better weather but not too much leg exposure, June!

Thank you to all the Westray Ladies for their great company and to Derek Ward for presenting the trophy, aswell as mowing the greens in the rain again.

The Hope Ladies played in varying weather conditions today.

Those out earlier in the day had rain which then turned into warmth and sunshine, whilst the evening players had some wind and gradually cooler conditions.

The course still played long for both sections, as reflected in the final scores.

Winner of this month’s Deerness Gin was Lynn Shearer with a Nett 78 who was delighted to take home a bottle of ‘Vara’, breaking ‘cracking’ Violet Ward’s stranglehold on the gin prizes to date!

Thank you to Deerness Gin for their generous sponsorship which is greatly appreciated

Sunday 24th July saw 15 competitors playing the Scottish Sea Farms Senior Ladies Open in the Hope.

Early morning thick mist gave way to heavy downpours later, but thankfully the weather behaved during the majority of the competition, even becoming very warm at times.

A shotgun start had everyone back to the clubhouse at approximately the same time for home bakes while the scores were processed, and Kirstie Brown from Scottish Sea Farms presented the prizes as follows.

The Gross prize went to Lynn Shearer with an 87, maintaining her good form. Lynn also went home with a couple of Specials; Nearest the Pin in Two on the 9th and Longest Drive on the 17th, both in the 0-20 handicap category.

Violet Ward continued her winning streak coming First Nett overall with 72; second was Sheila Hourston on 75 and third Ann Oag with 77.

First Nett (Local Player) was Kate George on 73.

The other two Specials were won by Liz Pirie (Nearest the Pin in Three on the 9th) and Sandra Shearer (Longest Drive on the 17th) both in the 21+ handicap category.

Thanks to Scottish Sea Farms’ generosity there were plenty of prizes on offer today but perhaps the best of all was Eileen Spence’s news of the arrival of a long-awaited grandchild, our congratulations to all the family.

Special thanks go to Derek Ward who got soaked cutting the greens in the morning and, of course, to Scottish Sea Farms for their support which made our final open of 2022 one to remember.

Saturday 16th saw the 3rd round of the Ladies Club Championship at SRGC.

There was never any doubt about the Gross winner with Lynn Shearer in a class of her own, 19 strokes ahead of her nearest contender. It was much closer in the Nett Competition and with two of three rounds counting there was all to play for, despite Violet Ward posting two great scores in the first two rounds. Liz Pirie and Kate George were still in contention, but Kate fell away and Liz’s final round of 65 was still not enough. Violet won overall by four strokes.

Well done to the Club Championship winners but also to all the ladies for battling the strong winds which have haunted us much of this season. And thank you again to Robertsons for hosting our post competition meal, much enjoyed by all.
