Pipe Dream Plumbing Mens Open 2023

Sunday the 11th of June saw the much-anticipated return of the Pipedream open at South Ronaldsay Golf Club, a fixture both members and visitors look forward too when the summer calendar is released.

For the most part, the weather held dry with just a few isolated showers for the afternoon starters, but the breezy conditions lasted for the day.

Chris Burton was the only person to get a measure on the 6th for the closest to the pin in 1 and followed it up by draining his birdie putt.

Chris George almost hit a different postcode with his drive on the 17th to scoop the prize for the longest drive of the day.

In the Net section, it was the early groups who set the pace through the day – Chris Burton was holding first with a net 67 but that was short-lived when Ross Smith arrived at the clubhouse with a 67 also and pipping Chris into first place with the dreaded countback rearing its ugly head. Not the last time we would see this today. Ross held on to first spot for most of the day until Angus Thompson arrived in with a fantastic net 62 to scoop his maiden open title and ensure the trophy stayed on the right side of the barriers. Well played Angus!

In the Gross Section, the afternoon players got the better of the scoring, but it was another South Ronaldsay player that made up the top 3. Glenn Grange was third with a 79 keeping up his fine run of scores in the 70’s but it was 2 Stromness players who battled it out for bragging rights. Defending champion Dennis Harvey carded a fine 74 after a shaky start to his back 9 but steadied the ship and finished out with a birdie 3 on 18 after a fine tee shot. But it wasn’t quite enough to beat the dreaded countback as his Stromness compatriot Angus Sutherland arrived in the clubhouse with a 74 also to Pip Dennis for the title. Good shooting Angus!

Thanks as always goes to Andy at Pipedream Plumbing; you’ve been a great supporter of the club for many years, and we continue to appreciate it. Erik who presented the prizes. Derek, Derek and all who gave up time to get the course looking as good as it was – it’s been a long time since we had the course playing so well, so early in the season. Sheila for sorting the draw and keeping the scores in check, Mike who as always did a stellar job starting us. The ladies who looked after us men with the rolls, soup and home bakes and Angus for providing some of the best soup I’ve had.

Presentation evening and meal

Saturday 23rd November was the night that SRGC held its annual end of season presentation night and meal, this year at the Sands in Burray. 25 folk turned out for the event and were treated to a most enjoyable meal and service from the staff at the Sands. After the meal Mike Woolridge took on the role of master of ceremonies with a small speech thanking all involved with the club over the year amongst other things, he then followed this by directing the presentation of the prizes to those present. A good night was had by all. Thank you for supporting our club.

SRGC Open

This years SRGC open, sponsored by the Orkney Hotel and Murray Arms, took place on Saturday 13th July. The turn out for this event was smaller than in previous years with just 38 golfers taking part.

Andrew Milne was this years champion winning the gross prize with a respectable 74 and Morgan Reid won the best nett prize with a 66.

2019 Club Championship

Well done to the winners of the club championship today.

Chris Burton for winning the gross after a 3 hole play off beating Ben Lacy Brown, Chris played the 3 extra holes in level par to be crowned 2019 gross champion. Both finished the 4 rounds on 310.

Ben Lacy Brown finished 1st nett with 129 beating Jamie Drever on count back with Chris Burton finishing 3rd also on 129. Some good golf from the young ones over the week with some challenging weather. Short video of the last hole in the play off.

Lifetime presentation

South Ronaldsay GC recently presented Cpt Bill Banks with a lifetime membership of the club as a mark of gratitude for his generosity to the club over the years since its inception. Bill donated the original 9 tee markers when the course opened in 2005 and over the years has provided ball washers along with other items. He remains a great supporter of the club and attends as much events and competitions as possible.

Pipe Dream Plumbing mens Open

The SRGC. Pipedream Open was held on Sunday 16th June with 36 men competing. The first players teed off at 8.30am in slightly overcast conditions.
Ross Smth was first to come in with a respectable Nett 65 but the leader at the end of the morning was Brian Firth with a Gross 77. Brian was hoping for a trophy 2 weeks in a row but had a long wait ahead.
The afternoon round commenced at 3.00pm in excellent conditions, sunshine and no wind. Sadly it was short lived as an hour in torrential rain fell and waterproofs went on! The trees were attracting a lot of balls, with the burn and ditches getting their fare share too.
As the scores came in in the early evening it was tight in the Nett section. B. Firth kept his lead in the Gross section until the last few groups came in when he was pipped by 2 shots by Chris Burton.

The club would like to thank Pipedream for their sponsorship and Andy for presenting the prizes. Thanks also to the Ladies for the hot soup and refreshments which were much appreciated in the dreich conditions.

Donaldsons of Orkney senior mens open 2019

9th June saw 31 golfers compete in this years seniors open. The weather was overcast but pleasant with little wind. The winner of the nett competition was Stuart Barnett with a very good 63, 2nd prize went to Benny Thomson and 3rd was Robbie Norquoy. The gross trophy went to Brian Firth with a very respectable 75. Because the sponsor put up a new nett trophy the Doulls nett cup was played for by SRGC golfers not in the main prizes and Chris George was the winner of this with his 66. Erik Donaldson won the special at the 15th being closest to the pin in one. After play finished the sponsors treated all those present to pulled pork rolls and these were well received. The entry fee from this competition and the ladies senior open on the 7th July will be donated to this years nominated charity – The British Heart Foundation. A very good afternoons golf was had and the committee would like to thank the sponsor, the golfers who competed and all those who helped with the preparations and running the event.

Scapa Garage Open

The first open of 2019 was held on Saturday 22nd April. Sponsored by Scapa Garage.
The field was made up of 43 men and 21 ladies, an excellent turn out for which SRGC are very grateful.
Conditions were breezy, with the wind speed varying up and down constantly for most of the day, which made play a bit more interesting. The temperature was on the cooler side, but it was dry, and the course was in great condition with the greens playing fast.
Some good scoring was seen from the early groups, with a few in the mid to low 60’s nett. But it was Glen Grange’s 62 that would be the bench mark. The afternoon groups never really challenged this and Glen held on to win the Nett prize.
In the Gross section Neil Tait and Stuart Thomson were tied on 77 for the morning groups until Barry Reeve came in with a 75 only to be beaten by James Sim with a 72.
Back at the club there was a longest drive competition, on the simulator, which proved to be fun and competitive, Connor Crawford had the lead for most of the day with 273yrds until James Sim blasted a 289 yarder to win.
All in all a great day was had with tea, coffee, sandwiches and home bake’s on offer.

SRGC retain the coveted Scootie Pudding trophy

8 four balls of SRGC and SGC golfers played, at Stromness golf club, on Sunday 7th April in the annual season starting competition between the 2 clubs. The trophy was brought back to the Hope after the visitors beat the hosts 4 1/2 to 3 1/2. A great day out was had and Stromness GC provided a course in great condition and put on a good spread for all who took part.
